MICHAEL Weatherly has no doubt who to credit for the continuing success of NCIS.

“There’s a lot of television that comes and goes fast, but ultimately we have succeeded because of Don Bellisario; he knows how to tell a good yarn,” Weatherly says of the NCIS writer, producer and director.

“This is the man who created Magnum PI, Quantum Leap and JAG, and he understands that the audience is looking for familiar characters that resonate.

“With NCIS it’s like the characters are family members. We have those family members in a workplace scenario.

In a television landscape awash with carbon copy cop shows and detectives, NCIS special agent Tony DiNozzo is a breath of fresh air. Although you might not want to breathe when he’s around.

DiNozzo is childish, prone to spouting quotes from movies and has been known to break wind in company, much to the disgust of his colleague, Ziva David.

NCIS star Michael Weatherly charmed all and sundry during a recent visit, even his ex, writes Andrew Murfett.

AMERICAN actors visiting for the Logies tended to arrive knowing little of the ceremony – and the Australian industry – and dismissively sleepwalk through the show.

But the consensus among viewers last week was that charismatic NCIS actor Michael Weatherly had created a benchmark for American invitees. Just a few hours after finishing his last drink at Channel Ten’s Logies after party, Weatherly held court in the station’s boardroom.

WHEN a bleary-eyed Michael Weatherly posed for a picture with the Herald Sun on Monday, he admitted he had grabbed only an hour’s sleep after enjoying the Logies festivities.

The Hollywood star left the Channel 10 afterparty at Crown’s Tonic Bar about 2.45am. So what kept him from catching some shut-eye between then and his wake-up call?

The answer is Heidi of the mountains look-alike Nicky Whelan.

The ambitious soap actor struck up an intense conversation with Weatherly at the afterparty.
